Getting Away Without the Kids

Well, instead of dreaming about a fall vacation, (which will most likely remain a dream) we (my husband and I) finally took a much needed vacation down south to Eilat. Moti (my husband) didn’t leave me much choice about taking Liah, our 9 month old daughter. It was a definite no. I was a bit apprehensive at first, but after months of sleepless nights (ok, so not really sleepless nights, but definitely not straight sleeping nights), I agreed to leave her behind with the grandparents and really try to enjoy the “family” vacation without the whole family, and that means no Barbie (the family dog) as well.

At first, things were great, no kid and no worries. It really is a relief not having to worry about a dirty diaper or the next feed. And even better, not to have to worry about bed time or night time feedings. But after the first day, I couldn’t help notice everyone else’s kids. Everywhere I turned there seemed to be another kid. And as someone who doesn’t really appreciate other peoples kids (that’s putting it nicely), I couldn’t believe how much I was being drawn to them. Baby tubes, baby bathing suites, baby sun hats and all the family pictures being taken. I couldn’t help but be jealous.

As the days passed (we were on vacation for 5 days), it became harder and harder. There wasn’t a day that I didn’t think, talk and even cry about Liah. My husband in his attempt to reassure me, explained to me how everyone else with kids at the hotel was actually jealous of me. But what can I say, its not easy being away from you kid for the first time.

So the drive home (4 hours), was actually very exciting. I couldn’t wait to see my baby. I missed her like crazy and it seemed to have put a bit of a damper on my vacation. I swore I would never leave her behind on the next family vacation. And finally seeing her again brought me back to life. I couldn’t believe that I survived 5 days without her. Never again!

The first night home came and went. Liah was up two times in the middle of the night and again at 6am. She peed all over her clothes and I needed to bring her to daycare half asleep. It was then that I remembered why we left her behind and it was then that I swore we would never take her on our next vacation. Thank god for grandparents!
